Why is Craggs & Co Spelt Wheat so special?
There are many, many reasons why our spelt is so special. Even before the seed is planted we are working hard to make sure it has a head start in life! Every single step of our harvesting process can be traced. It is very rare to find spelt wheat and flour that has been grown, harvested, milled and stored in the UK. Most are imported via the EU with little or no understanding of where the wheat originated. Craggs & Co are extremely proud of the fact that every single grain of spelt wheat that goes into our flour has been lovingly produced in the beautiful North East of England.
Here’s how we make sure our spelt is of the finest quality from seed to plate.
Rain & Shine
Our farm is sandwiched between the Pennines and the North Sea. Cool westerly winds from the Pennines + moisture from the coastlines + average monthly rainfall of 50mm + 1400 hours a year of sunshine = Beautifully Balanced Weather
Our soil is naturally rich in clay particles and lovingly ploughed to replenish nutrients with organic matter

Our crops are lovingly grown. We keep a very close eye on our crops to make sure they have everything they need to succeed.

We use state of the art gravity separation machinery to make sure only the finest grains make it into our flour.
A breath of fresh air
Our wind turbines produce the electricity to dry the wheat with the cleanest heat possible.
Full of flavour
Spelt wheat has its own little jacket call a husk. We leave its protective coat on right up until it is milled. This makes sure all of the flavour is contained within the grain.
The science bit
We know how fantastic our spelt wheat is. We can also prove it’s fantastic...we use the latest TASSC approved testing facilities at Craggs & Co. Each batch of spelt wheat is tested for moisture, protein, hagberg levels and bushel weight.

We’ve worked hard to make sure our flour is milled to the ideal specification.....not too fine, not too coarse! Just perfect!
