Spring Spelt

Spring Spelt

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

It is fair to say the weather over the last few months has been pretty dire. Although the temperatures haven’t been particularly cold it has been one of the wettest summers on record since 1910. The UK had 140% of rainfall over the summer months and so far, 127% throughout October & November.

Many individuals and industries have been hit hard by the unpredictable British weather. Farming across the whole of the UK has seen some of the toughest conditions they have faced in a long time. Many of the arable farmers we have spoken have reported their land is far too wet to drill winter wheat for 2020 harvest and they are starting to look for other options for spring wheat.

Craggs & Co have also found the season particularly challenging. We had one of the toughest harvests on record and although we have drilled a substantial amount of ancient grains we are still behind where we would like to be. We are fortunate to have a team of assured growers across the country and have the option of drilling our spelt in spring when hopefully things will have dried up by then!! So, although we are hoping for better weather, we are not quite feeling the same pressure as some of our fellow farmers.

If there are any assured growers out there who are looking for the option of spring drilled wheat then we are always looking for additional spelt growers. It may just be the alternative you need for harvest 2020. If you would like any additional details please e-mail
